Block Update – Rain 5.0

Block Update – Rain 5.0

Hi guys,

I completely redesigned this block. This block will now work differently depending on how much data you have in your database.

Users with < 1 year of data

The block will work as it worked until now, showing maximum specified in the block settings.

Users with > 1 year of data

The block will first calculate average precipitation for each day in the year. Then, it will set that as the gauge maximum and show you the percentage.

For example:

Imagine it is 14 Mar. The block will calculate the average precipitation total for 1 to 14 March and for 1 Jan – 14 March. It will then compare this with values from this year and show this as a percentage. The gauge will therefore show if you are above/below the average cumulative annual/monthly sum. If it is over or equal to 100%, the gauge will be full.

See DEMO

Enjoy

  1. Thanks Jachym. I didn’t mean to sound rude. This is literally the first time you have made a change I’m not keen on. You can’t please everyone I suppose!
I’m still blown away by the quality of your work. Keep it up!

  2. Jachym,

I noticed that my rain gauge was showing in mm rather than inches. I went to main setup and set the “Webpage default displayed units” and saved it, but it doesn’t actually save and reverts back to the previous units.

    • I am not forcing anything on you, I told you you can easily use 4.0, there were no bug fixes in 5.0, if you don´t have the files any more, just email me, I will send you the 4.0 zip file, no problem.

  3. The annual gauge is actually very useful to me, so it’s a pity to have this forced upon us. Percentages are of much less interest to a casual visitor than actual amounts, and to me personally only of interest in comparing my data with official local Met Office stations. It was a great way of seeing at-a-glance rainfall data. Now overly complicated IMHO.

  4. Hi Jachym,
I’m not quite so keen on this update, and preferred my gauges to show the actual amount for the day, month and year. The percentages are interesting and could still be displayed underneath but could we possibly have an option to choose what the gauges display?
For now I will stick with Rain 4.0.

    • Hi,
well it is complicated, this was actually done on a request. It sort of makes sense, because especially the annual gauge is useless in the first part of the year, if you set it to max eg. 500, then anything around 20, 30, 50 will not be visible.
Feel absolutely free staying with 4, it will work fine.

  5. Or maybe just always set the max to either 100 if it is <100% and if it is above 100%, set it to the actual value, eg. 120%, so the max will be 120%, the gauge will therfore be full always when it is above average

  6. another thing, comparing my page with Luc’s: both have no rain today (no rain since 2 resp 4 days).
    Luc’s shows:
    Today
    0.0mm
    0.0% avg
    empty circle.
    mine shows:
    Heute
    0.0mm
    100.0% avg
    full circle…..
    Why?

  7. Hi Jachym,

I like the idea for the new block, but for my situation the new graphic presentation is not very informative.
This Month and This Year both show a full blue circle with each the text 100% written in it.
The text info below the graphs show respectively 229.7% avg and 134.4% avg for Month and Year.

Maybe a better presentation for the circle graphs is a horizontal line half way representing 100% avg. Then the graph would have a scale from 0% to 200%.

Below the rain values of my weather station over the last years.

    Cheers, Luc
